Chris’ Story.
Chris has a truly great story and we’re really fortunate to have done a lot of work alongside him.
Some of you may recognise Chris from the television where he is famed for being a stand-up comedian. Just a few of the shows Chris has featured in include 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Would I Lie To You, Have I Got A Bit More News For You, Eastenders, CBeebies series Me Too! and many more.
Chris lost his sight when he was 21, after being diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. Before this Chris had a career as a software developer.
After being diagnosed Chris struggled for employment but did find himself a job selling medical equipment over the phone in a call centre. Chris described this as “dead boring” and took to the stage. Initially, his stand up comedy started as a tick off his bucket list of things to do. After getting some laughs Chris decided to pursue this and has obviously gone on to have an incredible career.
Chris is well up on his technology and swears by his iPhone for many jobs like most of us, however, a particular area he found difficult was when he is required to stay in hotels due to tour venues. Chris found reading everyday objects around the hotel difficult, for example, door signs, toiletry bottles, menus and even the do not disturb signs.
We showed Chris the OrCam Read which he found really useful due to its portability. When we questioned why this was a better solution than his phone his answer was so logical "I can watch the TV on my phone, but I don’t. It’s a product designed for a specific job that gives a better user experience”.
