Optical Magnifiers.
Optical Magnifiers are the most common type of magnifier, this is due to most Hospital Low Vision Clinics giving them out after assessment.
Optical Magnifiers are however are very limited in there use. Optical magnifiers have a fixed power and are issued according to an eye test. Optical Magnifiers are available in various strengths, the maximum being 14x magnification.
Optical Magnifiers come with various options, including illuminated, hand, and stand magnifiers.
Electronic Magnifiers.
Electronic Magnifiers are a natural progression from Optical Magnifiers, simply due to magnification levels going so much higher.
However, Electronic Magnifiers have many more advantages. In comparison to an Optical Magnifier, Electronic Magnifiers give you the ability to select the magnification level you need rather than being fixed. Electronic Magnifiers also let you set colour combinations, this means the camera adjusts the colours to make things easier to read, offered called false colours (you can select white on black, black on yellow etc).
Electronic Magnifiers have are also auto-focus. With Optical Magnifiers (hand) you have to hold the magnifier the correct distance from the object, this isn’t necessary with Electronic Magnifiers.
Electronic Magnifiers come in lots of shapes and sizes. These have been developed to suit different requirements. Types include desktop, transportable, head-worn and portable. Each of these types is unique with the user requirement or environment it will be used.
Electronic Magnifiers certainly make arts, crafts, hobbies and reading in large quantities a lot easier.
Text to Speech (OCR)
Text to Speech machines simply read printed text aloud to you. Some of our Electronic Magnifiers will Magnify and Read.
Text to Speech is designed for those whose vision is severe enough that Electronic Magnifiers are not suitable. Text to speech machines can be used with blindness.
That said, if you are using large levels of magnification it is sometimes easier and quicker to listen to text than magnify it.
